Virginia State Health Commissioner Dr. Norman Oliver announces retirement

Virginia State Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver, MD, has retired from his position effective January 14, 2022. Dr. Oliver served as Commissioner since June 2018, prior to which he served as the department's Deputy Commissioner for Population Health, as the Walter M. Seward Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, as an NAC Member of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and as a Professor of Family Medicine for the Family Medicine Education Consortium. He earned an MS in Medical Anthropology and an MD at Case Western Reserve University. Incoming Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin opposes the state mask and vaccine mandates favored by Dr. Oliver. A new Commissioner has not yet been named.
