Capt. Richard N. Massie recently assumed the command of the Naval Base Kitsap. He succeeds former Commanding Officer, Capt. Richard G. Rhinehart, in the position. He commanded USS MAINE (SSBN 741) (GOLD) from 2010 through 2013. Capt. Massie completed the first deployment of an OHIO-Class guided missile and special forces submarine as Executive Officer aboard USS OHIO (SSGN 726) (BLUE). His sea duty includes service as Submarine Operations Officer on the staff of Commander, NIMITZ STRIKE GROUP, as Navigator/Operations Officer aboard USS LA JOLLA (SSN 701), and as a Division Officer aboard USS HELENA (SSN 725). His shore duty includes service at Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, San Diego, California and Joint Duty as Chief, Nuclear Enterprise Division, U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany, where he was responsible for the command, control, and oversight of U.S. nuclear forces in Europe. Capt. Massie most recently served as Commander, Submarine Squadron NINETEEN and previously served as Deputy Commander of both Submarine Development Squadron FIVE and Submarine Squadron NINETEEN. He holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master’s degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College.
