New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Dr. Mary Travis Bassett, MD, to be Commissioner of the Department of Health. Most recently the Director of the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University and the FXB Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Bassett has served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as Deputy Commissioner of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as Program Director for the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's African Health Initiative, and as an Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. She earned a BA in History and Science at Harvard University in 1974, an MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1979, and an MPH in Health Services at the University of Washington in 1985. Dr. Bassett succeeds outgoing Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker, MD.
