Col. Stephen J. Acosta is the new Assistant Wing Commander of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing

September 14, 2021: Col. Stephen J. Acosta is the new Assistant Wing Commander of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. He succeeds former Assistant Wing Commander, Col. Jeffrey P. Hogan, in the position. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. upon graduation and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1997. He was assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), to serve as the Assistant Air Officer and Maritime Special Purpose Force Forward Air Controller. While assigned to the 15th MEU, he deployed in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003. Col. Acosta served as a FA-18 Instructor, Forward Air Controller, Cluster Weapons, Close Air Support and Forward Air Controller (Airborne) Subject Matter Expert, and Air Officer Course instructor for Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One at MCAS Yuma, AZ. He then reported to the Joint Staff for assignment as the Branch Chief of Strategic Plans and Integration, Strategic Plans and Policy (J-5). In August 2017, he assumed the duties of the Director of the Commandant of the Marine Corps Safety Division until reporting to VMFAT-101 in January 2018. Col. Acosta assumed command of VMFAT-101 in July 2018 and in August 2020 assumed the duties of Chief of Staff, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
