Colonel Joseph L. Sheffield will assume command of the 28th Bomb Wing, Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD

June 7, 2021: Colonel Joseph L. Sheffield will assume command of the 28th Bomb Wing, Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD. He will replace Col. David A. Doss, who has been Commander of the 28th Bomb Wing since May 2019. Col. Sheffield comes from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, where he commanded the 36th Operation Group. Col. Doss will be going to a position with the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command headquarters, Barksdale Air Force Base, LA. Colonel Sheffield received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy. He has served in a variety of operational assignments including B-1 Instructor Pilot, Evaluator Pilot, Weapons Officer, 34th Bomb Squadron Director of Operations, 37th Bomb Squadron Commander, and 28th Operations Group Deputy Commander. He commanded the 37th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron on two deployments to Southwest Asia. His staff assignments include Chief of Future Operations and Executive Officer at 17th Air Force/Air Forces Africa. Prior to his current assignment, he served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Operations Directorate (J3) as the Global Force Management Rotational Branch Chief and Division Chief of the National Military Command System Operations.Colonel Sheffield is a graduate of Air Command and Staff College, the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, and the Eisenhower School of National Security and Resource Strategy. He is a Command Pilot with more than 3,500 flight hours and 1,100 combat hours.
