President Joseph R. Biden has announced his intent to nominate Christopher P. Maier to be the new Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict

May 4, 2021: President Joseph R. Biden has announced his intent to nominate Christopher P. Maier to be the new Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. Mr. Maier currently serves as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. He previously led the Defeat-ISIS Task Force at the Department of Defense. He was also appointed as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism in the Obama-Biden Administration. Prior to his time at the Department of Defense, Mr. Maier served in a variety of leadership and staff positions at the National Counterterrorism Center. He was detailed to the National Security Council staff from 2009-2013. He began his government career as an intelligence analyst on Middle East and Africa issues. Mr. Maier still actively serves in the Air National Guard. He holds degrees from the University of California, Berkley and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
