May 21, 2020: State Rep. John C. Velis, D-Westfield, defeated John F. Cain, a Republican newcomer from Southwick, to fill the seat that has been vacant since January when Donald F. Humason resigned from the Legislature to become the mayor of Westfield. Preliminary vote totals show Velis won 64 percent of the vote and Cain received 36 percent. For the first time in 25 years a Democrat will represent the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire District in the state Senate after voters chose a sitting state representative over a local businessman in a special election Tuesday to fill the vacant seat. The election had been delayed for nearly two months due to the COVID-19 public health emergency. The seat will be up for election again in November and both Velis and Cain pledged to run again.
