Jan. 10, 2019: David Van Wie has been named the Director of the Air and Missile Defense Sector at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). Wie has been named to lead the division that works to increase the country’s ability to defend against missile and aircraft threats, APL officials said on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019. Wie has worked at APL for thirty-five years. Wie has conducted research on topics such as missile defense, unconstrained warfare, conventional prompt global strike and hypersonics. He has also written more than 140 articles about hypersonic air breathing propulsion, plasma aerodynamics and high-temperature fluid dynamics. He also works as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University’s G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering and is a recipient of the Air Force Award for Meritorious Civilian Service.
