Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Republican, is re-elected to office

Nov. 7, 2018: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Republican, was elected to a second term on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018. Abbott defeated Lupe Valdez, Democrat. Abbott already had $41 million in his campaign account when Valdez, the 13-year sheriff for Dallas County, became the Democratic front-runner when she announced her campaign in December, 2017, and the Republican incumbent only increased his monetary advantage in the following months. Valdez was attempting to be the first Democrat to be elected Governor of Texas since Ann Richards was elected in 1990.
