Charity Dean appointed as Assistant Director, California Department of Public Health

October 8, 2018: Charity Dean was appointed as the Assistant Director at the California Department of Public Health by Gov. Jerry Brown on Sept. 28, 2018. Dean, 40, Santa Barbara Democrat, was most recently the Public Health Officer at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, a position she held since 2014. She was previously the county’s Deputy Public Health Officer from 2011 to 2014. Dean previously worked as a Resident Physician in internal medicine at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital from 2008 to 2011. Dean has also worked as a Commissioner at the Santa Barbara County First 5 Commission and a fellow at the California Health Care Foundation since 2017. Dean received a doctor of medicine degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine and a master of public health degree in tropical medicine from the Tulane University Schoo lof Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dean will be paid $200,004 per year in her new position.
