Sept. 13, 2018: Joe “Keith” Sledd was appointed as the Chairman of the newly-created Texas Governor’s Committee to Support the Military by Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018. “The Committee will actively look for ways to maintain and enhance military value at installations within the state, and will include no more than 22 members appointed by the Governor,” according to a statement from the Governor’s Office. “Led by a chair and vice-chair, members of the committee will include Texas-resident veterans, community leaders, and business leaders.” Sledd, of Gatesville, is the executive director of the Heart of Texas Defense Association. He worked for the U.S. Army for thirty-four years until he retired in 2017. Sledd received a bachelor of arts degree in history from East Central University, a master of science degree in logistics management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a master of science degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
