August 7, 2018: Steven M. Garrett has been hired as the Sacramento County, Calif., Public Defender, effective on July 22, 2018. Garrett has worked at the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office for more than twenty-five years, working in almost every unit of the office. He was the Lead Attorney of the Office’s Juvenile Division from 2009 to 2011, and a Supervisor at the Division from 2011 to 2014. During this time, Garrett managed the day-to-day operations of the Division, created new case management tools, expanded the use of volunteer recruitment, collaborated with all justice partners and community members at juvenile committees and meetings, and was a member of the California Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Work Group in 2012. As the Acting Public Defender since September, 2017, Garrett successfully managed personnel, budgetary and legal strategy decisions at the office of nearly 150 attorneys, investigators and support staff. Before his time with Sacramento County, Garrett was a lawyer in private practice, an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, Law, and a Clerk to the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Garrett received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Stanford University and he received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, Law.
