August 7. 2018: Maria Siguenza has been appointed as the Director of the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs, effective this month, August, 2018, Gov. Jay Inslee announced on July 23, 2018. Siguenza succeeds Lisa van der Lugt, who was re-assigned as the Director of the state government’s Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises. Siguenza is currently the Manager of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity at the Washington State Department of Licensing. Before that, Siguenza was the Business Diversity and Legislative Program Manager at the state’s Department of Social and Health Services. She also worked as Interpreter Quality Assurance Coordinator at DSHS, a medical assistance specialist at the Washington State Health Care Authority, and at the Sea Mar Community Health Centers. She previously handled Spanish-English interpreter services at Skagit Valley Hospital and she ran her own business as a medical interpreter. Siguenza has also worked in sales and accounting for Skagit Growers and as an office manager at a small family-owned farm. Siguenza received a bachelor’s degree in humanities and social sciences from Western Washington University.
