July 9, 2018: Patricia R. Bellock has been appointed as the Director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHFS) by Gov. Bruce Rauner, effective on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, Rauner announced on Monday, July 2, 2018. Bellock succeeds DHFS Acting Director Teresa Hursey, who took office in June, 2018, when Felicia Norwood resigned to work in the private sector. Hursey retains her position as the state’s Medicaid Director. Bellock is retiring from the Illinois State House of Representatives, where, in 2013, she was the first woman to hold the office of Deputy Minority Leader. Bellock was in the Illinois General Assembly since 1999. Bellock was the Minority spokesman on the House Human Services Committee and the Human Services Appropriations Committee. She has also worked on committees with three national organizations working on health care legislation and public policy issues throughout the United States. A native of River Forest, Bellock graduated from Saint Norbert College in Wis., where she received a bachelor's degree in history and American government. She has received dozens of awards over the years from numerous organizations for her work on various health care policy issues, particularly in the areas of mental health, developmental disabilities, and children's health.
