Virginia State House of Delegates officials create Select Committee on School Safety

March 9, 2018: Officials at the Virginia House of Delegates have created a Select Committee on School Safety. The Committee is scheduled to review state and local policies on school security and then make recommendations for the 2019 legislative session. Announcing his plan on Thursday, March 7, 2018, Virginia State House Speaker Kirk Cox, Colonial Heights Republican, said it's been more than 150 years since the House last formed a select committee. The Committee, which will be chaired by Cox, will have twelve Republicans and ten Democrats, consistent with the House's normal rules on partisan proportionality. Announcing the Committee's creation on the State House floor, Del. Danny Marshall, Danville Republcian, said the Committee is scheduled to focus on "strengthening emergency preparedness, hardening school security infrastructure, implementing security best practices, deploying additional security personnel, providing additional behavioral health resources for students, and developing prevention protocols at primary and secondary institutions across the commonwealth."
