Dave Lopez appointed Secretary, Oklahoma Education and Workforce Development

Jan. 10, 2018: Oklahoma Secretary of State Dave Lopez was also appointed as the state government’s Secretary of Education and Workforce Development by Gov. Mary Fallin on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, effective immediately. Lopez, Oklahoma City, succeeds Natalie Shirley, who was named to the post in January, 2015. She recently resigned as the President of Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City. She is scheduled to start her duties later this month, January, 2018, as the president and chief executive officer of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Lopez is a longtime civic and community leader. In 2013 and 2014, was the Acting Superintendent of Oklahoma City Public Schools while the school board launched and concluded a national search for a permanent Superintendent. As the Oklahoma Secretary of State, Lopez is a senior adviser to the Governor on policy, economic and legislative issues. He previously worked as the Governor’s Secretary of Commerce from 2011 to 2013. Lopez was previously the president of Oklahoma City-based American Fidelity Foundation and the president of Downtown Oklahoma City, Inc. Before that, he had a twenty-two-year career at SBC Communications, now AT&T, including working as the President of SBC Oklahoma and as the resident of SBC Texas. Lopez received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from New Mexico State University.
