Dec. 6, 2017: Massachusetts State Sen. Harriette Chandler, Worcester Democrat, was appointed as the Acting President of the Massachusetts State Senate on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017. Chandler’s appointments by her colleagues was confirmed by a unanimous vote of State Senators at a Senate session held on Monday evening, Dec. 4, 2017. Chandler succeeds Stanley Rosenberg, who resigned from the State Senate President post on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, amid allegations of sexual harassment by several men against Rosenberg’s husband, Bryon Hefner. Chandler is the current Senate Majority Leader, only the second woman in Massachusetts history to hold that position. Chandler was the first woman to be elected as a State Senator from Worcester. She will be the second female Massachusetts State Senate President. Chandler has been in the State Legislature since 1995, and she has been in the State Senate since 2001.
