Dec. 6, 2017: Hans Riemer, At-Large Democrat, was unanimously appointed as the next President of the Montgomery County, Md., County Council by fellow Councilmen yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017. Riemer was most recently the Council’s Vice President, working with outgoing County Council President Roger Berliner, Potomac and Bethesda Democrat. Also yesterday, Dec. 5, Councilmen appointed Nancy Navarro, Mid-County Democrat, as the Council’s next Vice President. Riemer was first elected to the Montgomery County Council in 2010. Montgomery County is located just outside of Washington, D.C., is Maryland’s largest jurisdiction, and has several areas of upper-class wealth, including Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda and Silver Spring. However, county officials revealed this week, the week of Dec. 3-9, 2017, that the county currently has a $120 million deficit—and officials are looking at cutting government services to erase the budget shortfall.
