Stephen Akard nominated as State Department Foreign Service Director General

October 12, 2017: Stephen Akard was nominated as the Director General of the Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Akard, of Indiana, has been the Senior Adviser at the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Growth at the State Department since January, 2017. Previously, he was the Chief of Staff, Vice President and General Counsel, and Director of International Development at the Indiana Economic Development Corporation from 2005 to 2017. From 1997 to 2005, Akard was an officer at the State Department’s Foreign Service, with assignments in India, Belgium, and as a Special Assistant at the office of the Executive Secretariat. Akard received his B.A., M.B.A., and law degrees from Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis.
