Walter Copan confirmed as Commerce Department Under Secretary, Standards and Technology

October 10, 2017: Walter G. Copan was confirmed as the Under Secretary for Standards and Technology at the U.S. Department of Commerce by the U.S. Senate on Thursday, October 5, 2017. Copan, 63, of Colorado, is an expert in technology transfer, and as the Under Secretary for Standards and Technology, he would lead the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which supports physical science research and operates laboratories in Gaithersburg, Md., and Boulder, Colorado. Copan is a Ph.D. chemist and the president and chief executive officer of the Colorado-based Intellectual Property Engineering Group. Copan has worked as NIST’s Acting Director since Willie May retired in January, 2017, although his permanent position is running the agency’s laboratory programs.
